Mole Facts and FAQs

Moles are very mysterious animals as they live a subterranean life and are very rarely seen above ground. They can, however, cause severe damage to domestic lawns, sports fields, golf courses, agricultural fields, and equestrian areas, prompting many homeowners and businesses to seek the expertise of a professional mole catcher.

Soil from the molehills can foul silage and hay after being cut, causing listeria in cattle.  There is also the damage to the blades of the grass cutting implement, as stones are brought to the surface in the molehills.

Moles live only 4 years.  This drives an urge for the male to impregnate as many females as possible during a short breeding season, February to May. He will lose a third of his body weight doing so. And it is the only time he will enter another moles tunnels.

A pregnancy lasts only 4 weeks.  You will recognise the juvenile endeavours as they make mostly surface feeding runs., before they learn to clear main runs and produce ‘hills’.  Thus, a mole catcher knows whether they are dealing with a family or a single mole.  As adult moles are solitary creatures.  Their hunting territory usually covers 4 acres. The hills are produced to allow air into their underground tunnels.

Garden Mole FAQs

What has caused the lines... I thought moles made hills?

The lines close to the surface are ‘surface feeding ‘runs’.  Usually created by the young juvenile moles.  When mum has trained her offspring they will create piles of earth, ‘hills’.

How many moles are present?

During the summer months, from April, the presence of runs will indicate a family are in residence.  This consists of mother and three or four babies.  If hills only, it is likely to be one adult mole.  As they are solitary creatures when not mating (February to May).

Gender?

I am often asked a moles gender.  No idea why.  But interestingly, you cannot tell them apart as their genitalia are kept inside.  Only to be released during short mating season.  Making it much easier to traverse and excavate tunnels.

Life expectancy?

Moles have a short life span of around 4 years.  This drives them to mate ferociously.  A male loses a third of body weight in pursuit of many females in a single breeding season.  After a short 4 week pregnancy females rear young for 5 weeks.

Are they blind?

No.  But they do have poor eyesight as this is not needed underground.

Are they deaf?

No.  They have acute hearing and senses.  Absolutely hate noise and vibrations caused by gardening equipment (strimmers) and agricultural equipment.  This causes them to scatter.

Why the hills?

To allow air into their underground tunnels.
